What test equipment have others used with PrintCapture?

The table below lists some of the test equipment that our customers have used with PrintCapture. If you have used something not listed below we would like to hear from you. We would also like to hear from you if you have used one of the models listed below with a different print mode or if you have additional information that you would like to share. The information listed below is only as accurate as the data that you provide. Please send your information to support@printcapture.com.

When looking at the following list of test equipment you will notice that we used the term Hewlett-Packard instead of Agilent. The names are essentially interchangeable. If we mention a Hewlett-Packard 54616C it (probably) also applies to an Agilent 54616C.

PrintCapture 3.x added an I/O interface for National Instruments GPIB interfaces that use National Instruments' NI-488.2 device driver. NI's NI-488.2 device driver and GPIB interface must already be installed and working on your computer before it can be used by PrintCapture. If your computer has a National Instruments GPIB interface you will not need a GPIB-to-serial converter for your test equipment equipped with a GPIB interface.

One of our customers has developed a GPIB-USB Controller and a GPIB-Ethernet Controller that work well with PrintCapture. You can find out more about these interfaces at Prologix. These are nice little products that work well and are very good alternatives to the pricey National Instruments product lines. The GPIB-USB Controller uses a device driver that makes the USB port look like a serial port on your PC. We have created a PrintCapture Prologix Setup Document that will hopefully help you configure PrintCapture and Prologix to work together.

Note of Interest: The use of PrintCapture has grown far beyond the initial target of logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and spectrum analyzers. Customers are now using PrintCapture with many devices that we didn't envision or even know about.

Advantest R3261A	GPIB interface. HPGL data format.

Hewlett-Packard 1650A Logic Analyzer	Serial interface. Select Alternate printer type on the HP RS-232 configuration menu. Select NONE for handshaking because XON/XOFF handshaking causes lost data. Set PrintCapture to hardware RTS/CTS handshaking. The 1650A prints very slowly so there is little chance of buffer overruns. Set serial parameters to 19200 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stopbit, and no parity. The 1650A is a DCE so it plugs into the PC's DTE serial port using a generic straight-through 9-to-25 pin cable. One customer's HP3563A evidently has firmware that still has HPGL debug and development output commands ("OP" and "OE") embedded through-out the HPGL data. PrintCapture can't process the output commands for these HP3563As. He solved his problem by running his HP7470A in parallel (no pens and no paper) with PrintCapture so the HP7470A responds to the commands and allows the HP3563A to send its data to PrintCapture. Update: PrintCapture 3.2.17 and later should do a better job of processing the HPGL "Ox" output commands. Hewlett-Packard 3577A Network Analyzer	GPIB interface. HPGL data format. One customer used a Tastronic TAS001 GPIB-to-serial converter. PrintCapture 3.2.8 and later processes the cursor markers.

Customers have reported using National Instruments' GPIB-232CV-A and Blackbox's IC026A GPIB-to-serial converters. You should review the GPIB-232CV-A configuration FAQ and the IC026A configuration FAQ before buying one of these converters. Hewlett-Packard 8569A Spectrum Analyzer	GPIB interface. At least one customer reported that the only way to get his HP8569A to work was to set GPIB address 31 for the plotter address. However, valid GPIB addresses are from 0 through 30, so GPIB address 31 is an illegal address. We never could get this resolved. The net effect is that it appears that PrintCapture won't work with the HP8569A. If you have any further information please let us know.
Hewlett-Packard 8569B Microwave Spectrum Analyzer	GPIB interface. One customer sent a raw data file from the HP8569B that was not HPGL, PCL, or Epson data. The raw data file looked like it was targeted at a specific non-HP plotter but no further information is available. The net effect is that it appears that PrintCapture won't work with the HP8569B. If you have any further information please let us know.

We are pretty sure that this unit has HPGL "Ox" output commands in the raw data file. Use PrintCapture 3.2.17 or later for better real-time processing of these commands. We are pretty sure that this unit has HPGL "Ox" output commands in the raw data file. Use PrintCapture 3.2.17 or later for better real-time processing of these commands. Humphrey Field Analyzer, Humphrey Field Analyzer II Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer	Parallel interface. PCL data format. These eye examination machines use soft fonts to program Hewlett-Packard LaserJets for output. PrintCapture version 3.2.1 is the first version to process soft fonts for the Humphrey Field Analyzers. You will need a parallel-to-serial converter to get the data into PrintCapture. A B&B Electronics (www.bb-elec.com) 232SPS2 parallel-to-serial converter will work and doesn't require a parallel-to-Centronics cable. An ATEN (www.aten.com) SXP-320A will also work. All ATEN parallel-to-serial converters (SXP-320A, SXP-325A, SXP-500) are available from Provantage (www.provantage.com). The ATEN converters are a little harder to use because you need to find a DB25M-to-Centronics36F parallel cable (DB25 Male-to-Centronics36 Female). These cables are a little harder to find but you might try a search on the Internet using the keywords "centronics 36F gender". Generally speaking, the people that use Humphrey Field Analyzers are not technical people so we provided a color image (573KB) and a black-and-white image (65KB) for them to look at.
